Since 1998 the historic center of Urbino has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is enclosed by bastion walls and is entirely built of fired bricks: it is characterized by two main roads and almost perpendicular to each other, which meet in the main square and by a dense urban fabric. Narrow streets, sudden ups and downs and alleys, stairways and underpasses, buildings and churches form, thanks to the surrounding landscape, a wonderful scenery. The Palazzo Ducale, now home to the National Gallery of the Marche, is one of the most illustrious masterpieces of Renaissance art and unites with the surrounding city, giving rise to the development of a “City in the form of a Palace”, as defined by Baldassarre Castiglione.
