The toponym Caserta derives from the Latin “Casa Irta”, due to the elevated position of the city compared to the surrounding plain. Healthy climate, fertile lands, and a beautiful landscape convinced the King, Charles of Bourbon, that it would be the ideal site to welcome the new capital of the Bourbon Kingdom. The monumental complex of Caserta consists of the Royal Palace with the park, the gardens, the Carolino Aqueduct and the industrial complex of San Leucio, intended for the production of silk fabrics. It has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. It was built at the behest of Charles of Bourbon in the 18th century, as his palace and also for competing with Versailles and Madrid.
