Initially called “Malies” by the Samnite populations of Irpinia, then renamed by the ancient Romans Maleventum and then Beneventum, the city of Benevento boasts a conspicuous historical-artistic and archaeological heritage, which testifies to the passage of the peoples who have crossed its territory. Since June 2011, the Church of Santa Sofia, built in 760 by the Lombard Duke Arechi II, has become part of the UNESCO World Heritage within the serial site “Lombards in Italy: the places of power (568-774 AD)”, representing the emblem of the Lombard kingdom in Italy. The Duchy of Benevento was established in 576 and, from that year, the Lombards gave a renewed structure to the Roman city.
