Genoa’s tourist vocation has ancient roots, dating back to the Middle Ages and the sixteenth century, called the Golden Age, up to the twentieth century. The UNESCO Site “Genova, le Strade Nuove e il sistema dei Palazzi dei Rolli” represents the first European example of an urban development project with a unitary structure, planned by a public authority and associated with a peculiar system of public hospitality in private residences. The Palazzi dei Rolli arose as residences of aristocratic families and were classified, starting from a Senate decree of 1576, to be registered in the lists or registers, called “Rolli”, for public hospitality.
