  • Royal Palace of Caserta with the Park, the Aqueduct of Vanvitelli, and the San Leucio Complex

    Unesco site since 1997

The monumental complex of Caserta was built in the second half of the 18th century by the architect Luigi Vanvitelli, at the behest of Carlo di Borbone. The UNESCO site includes the sumptuous Royal Palace with the Park, the gardens, a wooded area, the Carolino Aqueduct and the industrial complex of San Leucio.

The heart is the Reggia, with its four courtyards and spectacular vestibules: it was also an administrative centre for the royal residences and the entire court. The English Garden is one of the most important, ancient and picturesque examples of landscaped gardens in Europe.

The San Leucio Complex was born from the dream of King Ferdinand to create an autonomous community of workers: the most important building is the ancient Casino del Belvedere, transformed to install a silk factory. An exceptional connection between the Royal Palace and the Royal Colony of San Leucio is the Carolino Aqueduct.
